Twigs, branches, sticks and leaves! We are talking about forests and trees this week! What covers trees like their skin? Bark! Bb is for bark is our letter this week!
Table activities are making sculptures with playdoh, twigs, string and other stuff, matching trees to a shape, leaf printing and an evergreen sensory bin.
Some KDIs we are looking at this week are-
Natural and physical world: Children gather knowledge
about the natural and physical world- learning about what trees do, how there are different kinds of forests in different places in the world.
Ecology: Children understand the importance of taking care
of their environment- How do we treat trees? What can we do so we don't use up trees?
Jesus Time- Our story this week has a tree as a main character. A tax collector named Zaccheus was anxious to see Jesus. He had heard that Jesus was friends even with tax collectors who everyone usually hated. Zaccheus had one small problem, he was small, short, and there was no way he could see Jesus over the crowds. So, Zaccheus climbed a tree! As Jesus passed by, he looked up in that tree, called to Zaccheus and invited himself to his house. Jesus went to Zaccheus' house for the evening meal and Zaccheus turned his life around. He stopped stealing from his fellow Israelites and paid back double what he had stolen. We should be just as desperate to see and hear from Jesus. He loves us and wants to be with us!!

If your child tells you we went to the basement today, they are telling you the truth. It's the time of the year that we have a tornado drill, so we went down into the basement and pretended we were "rocks" curling into a ball and covering our heads. So, if some version of that story is told, that's exactly what we did!
Next week, NO SCHOOL, it is Spring Break!! We will see you in April!

Blog for March 14 and 16
North to Alaska! We are looking at Alaska this week! The Great Race, the Iditarod is coming to an end, Mitch Seavey is on his way to his third win with his son Dallas close behind as they complete the grueling 1000+mile trek from Fairbanks to Nome via dogsled.
Our table activities are reflections of the Arctic, we played with Arctic animals in the snow, painted on snow, play in the iceberg dotted waters and colored a sled dog.
Today for small group we made a "snow" sculpture and we will add a page to our journal with "Aa is for Alaska" on Thursday.
Some of the KDIs we are working on this week are-
Natural and physical world: Children gather knowledge about the natural and physical world.- Looking at mountains and rivers and the cold Bering Sea. Figuring out where Alaska is in comparison to us.
Geography: Children recognize and interpret features and locations in their environment.- Alaska is part of their country.
Jesus Time - This week we see Jesus take time to bless some little children. Traditionally, children weren't part of worship until they were 13. The disciples thought they were doing Jesus a favor by keeping the children away from him, but He told them not to do it! The kingdom of heaven is made up of those with child-like faith and trust. Those children believed that Jesus was their Savior, they didn't doubt it or question it, they believed that He had to do it all, they couldn't do it for themselves. He blessed each child and loved them too!
Books of the Week- "Granite" by Susan Butcher, "The Salmon Princess" by Mindy Dwyer and other Alaska themed books as we have time.
Wednesday is our field trip to Leslie Science and Nature Center located at 1831 Traver Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105.
We will meet there at 10:00 am and we will be outside, no matter the weather!
Also, I don't know if preschool parents are aware, but I have been teaching 7th and 8th grade in the afternoons due to the teacher in that classroom suddenly resigning. Due to this, I will be doing parent-teacher conferences for the 7th and 8th grades. I will not be able to do 46 conferences in two afternoons! So, I would like to postpone preschool conferences to the week of April 3-7. I will send out a Sign Up Genius by the end of the week for you to schedule them.

Blog for March 7 and 9
"The more we get together, together, together, the more we get together, the happier we'll be"
We are learning about friends this week, what friends do for each other and how to be friends.
Table activities this week are fingerpainting with friends, making a weaving hoop with friends, kindness stones to decorate and making a paper chain with our friends.
Some KDIs we are working on this week are-
Empathy: Children demonstrate empathy toward others.- We are learning about how others feel and relating it to times we may have felt the same.
Community: Children participate in the community of the classroom.- We all work together to play, learn, clean up and get to know one another.
Building relationships: Children build relationships with other children and adults. - Talking time at snack or during play helps us get to know one another.
Jesus Time- This week we hear the story of the 10 Lepers. In Jesus' day, leprosy was a horrible disease. You were disfigured and ill, you had to leave your family and friends because leprosy was also contagious. You lost all that was near and dear to you. Imagine these 10 men, brought together because of this horrible disease and they hear rumors of someone who could cure it. This Jesus has healed the sick, raised people from the dead, fed thousands of people, blind see, deaf hear! We need to see him! They call to Jesus to help them. Jesus has compassion on them and tells them to go show themselves to the priest. The priest was the only one who could confirm that they were healed and able to go home. They ran, they knew they were being healed. They could go home! See their families! All ran to see the priest, all but one. One stopped, turned around and ran! Ran to Jesus! He threw himself at Jesus'feet and fell down in enormous gratitude for what had been given to him! Jesus helped him up and said, "Didn't I heal ten? Where are the other 9?" Wow!! How often do we forget to say thank you to our Lord? The sun rose today, I wake up in a warm house with clothes for my back, food for my belly and a car to spare my feet the walk! Thank you, Jesus!!
Books of the Week- "My Friend is Sad" by Mo Willems, "Madeline" by Ludwig Bemelmans, and "Ribbit" by Rodrigo Folgueira.
Next week Wednesday we have a field trip to the Leslie Nature Center in Ann Arbor. The cost is $5 each. An information and attendance slip will be coming home on Thursday.

School Closed
Dear parents,
Peace Lutheran Preschool is closed today due to a downed live wire.
During yesterday's high winds a wire was down in the playground area of the elementary school and was smoking in the mulch. The wind then blew that line against the fence and that fence connects to the fence around the preschool. They were in process of fixing the wire, but were not sure how soon it would be fixed.
There still will be a Spirit Night at 6pm tonight!

Blog for February 28 and March 2
Pets, pets, pets! It is pet week at preschool.
Today we had a visit from the Westland Humane Society and learned about how to take care of the pets we have.
Table activities this week are decorating a bone, playing pet store, playing with animals and a dog wash.
Some of the KDIs we are looking at this week are-
Community roles: Children recognize that people have different roles and functions in the community. - We learned what the Humane Society does and we learned about how we can help take care of our pets.
Pretend play: Children express and represent what they observe, think, imagine, and feel through pretend play- We examine different roles in our pet store or pretending to take care of animals.
Jesus Time- Our story this week is the story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells his followers a striking story. A man is on a journey and is robbed and beaten. He is lying near the road. This man is a Jew and a Jewish priest and a priest's assistant walk by, crossing to the other side of the road, in order to avoid helping this man. A Samaritan walks by and takes the man, places him on his donkey, cleans him up and takes him to an inn. He gives the innkeeper enough money to take care of the man for several days and promises to return to pay more if there is a need. What is so surprising about this story is that Jews and Samaritans were enemies. They would not normally help each other. This man went out of his way to help someone in need. He gave up his time and treasure and I am sure he was way out of his comfort zone. Who is our neighbor? How far would we go to help someone in need? We were Jesus enemies, but he came and gave up his life in our place. Out of love for him, we should love and care for all our neighbors!
Books of the Week- "Clifford's Kitten" by Norman Bridwell, "Whistle for Willie" by Ezra Jack Keats, and "Not Norman" by Kelly Bennett.
Spirit week is this week. On Thursday night we will have a spirit night to which you are all invited! Join us for a pep rally, root beer floats and the chance to throw a pie at some teachers, all for a great cause!
Thursday's dress up theme is Red and Black, our school colors!

Blog for Thursday, February 23rd
One of the warmest February on record!! So, today we played with ice!
I did not expect it to be quite so warm.
Morning activities gave friends the chance to build with ice cubes and decorate them with sequins, play with colored ice on paper or in bowls.
To choose this morning, each child chipped a bead out of ice and stated their plan to play.
Some KDIs we concentrated on today were-
Observing: Children observe the materials and processes in their environment. - We painted our ice and even took it outside, what happens to it?
Experimenting: Children experiment to test their ideas- How did the ice cubes mix colors? We experimented alot today!
Jesus time- This week we are hearing the story of Jesus feeding the 5000. Imagine, a group of close to 15,000 people followed Jesus all day, listening to him preach and teach and heal and bless. They followed him as he walked and soon it was close to the time for the evening meal. They were too far from home and Jesus did not want to send them away hungry. To test the disciples, he asked them to go in to a small village that was close by and get all these people something to eat. The disciples said they didn't have nearly enough money and even if they did, there was no way that small village would have enough food for them to eat! Then one disciple brought forward a small boy who was willing to share his lunch. He had two small dried fish and five small barley loaves. Jesus took the food and blessed it and began breaking it apart and handing it out, after everyone was full, the disciples collected 12 baskets full of leftovers! How did that happen? Another miracle that Jesus performed! He had to set the people straight though, after this they wanted to make him their "Bread King", they would never be hungry!! He left because that is not why He came, He came to save us by dying on the cross and rising again! He never stops caring for our bodies or our souls! Hallelujah, What a Savior!!

Next week is a special week! It is Spirit Week! The basketball players in the big school have a tournament next weekend!

On Thursday night, from 6-7:30 is Spirit Night- the pep band will play, pompom girls will do their routine and root beer floats will be served. You will also get the chance, for a small fee, to through a pie at some teachers, me included!!

Valentines Blog
Happy Valentine's Day!
Three year olds had a great Valentine's Day today! They played in a Valentine's sensory bin, decorated bags to take their treats home in, played some Valentine's games and delivered their Valentines.
They did a great job with name recognition! It was super to see!
Some KDIs emphasized this week are-
Reflection: Children reflect on their experiences.- We are really working on this one, try to remember what we played or did. Ask your kids when you get home from running errands if they can remember the places you went. Get those memories in gear- so important to retain other necessary information!
Concepts about print: Children demonstrate knowledge about environmental print- Looking for the names on the bags that match the names on their Valentines! Great job!
Jesus Time-We are learning about Jairus' daughter. A man had a daughter who was very sick and as a last resort, he sought out Jesus for help. As they were coming to the house, crying was heard, his daughter had already died. Jesus told the mourners in the house that she was only sleeping- they thought him crazy! He went into the girl's room, sat on the edge of her bed, took her hand and said, "Little girl, get up!" and she did!! He then told her mother to get her something to eat. Because Jesus lives, we also will live!
Books of the Week- We are reading various Valentine themed books this week, such as "Hedgehugs" by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper, " Love Bugs" by David A. Carter and "Blue's Valentines Day" by Deborah Reber.
